SSE Business Energy | Our expert review

Stable plans and sustainable options. Simple from SSE.

SSE Business Energy review, with different sustainable energy sources on a blue background

In 2020, SSE sold their Great British electricity supply to OVO Energy, essentially handing over their home energy services.

This was a strategic move that enabled them to focus more on their business energy supply, which at heart was the core of their business.

Ever since, they've been able to dedicate their time to creating a more sustainable service, with renewable electricity and accommodating prices for customers. As such, SSE has become a leader in the business energy sector.

With a focus on helping businesses achieve their environmental goals, SSE tailors its offerings to meet the unique needs of each customer, ensuring efficient and cost-effective energy usage.

Benefits of choosing SSE Business Energy

Choosing SSE Business Energy offers significant advantages for businesses seeking to optimize their energy consumption and reduce operational costs.

Their tailored solutions and expert support ensure that businesses not only meet their energy needs but also advance their sustainability objectives.

Stable plans

SSE offers the choice of fixed price plans for small and medium-sized businesses, which allows for better budgeting as you'll always know how much you're paying each month.

For larger businesses there are fully flexible plans that allow you to take advantage of live market prices and the changing conditions.

Sustainable options

If you want renewable energy sources for your business, SSE is the way to go. They use 100% renewable electricity sourced from their own UK-based wind and hydro assets.

For the smaller to mid-sized businesses, renewable electricity comes standard with the fixed plans, while larger businesses have the option to go for it on a flexible plan.

Local support & energy experts

SSE has a UK-based customer service team who are on hand to help with tips and methods on reducing your carbon footprint and helping you to reach net zero.

They also have world-class energy specialists, consultants and engineers with a deep knowledge and understanding of the technologies that drive their industries, and general energy experts who share that knowledge and use it to help support your business.

SSE Business Energy: Plans and rates

Business energy plans, with shaking hands, letters and electricity around it.

SSE offers two options for small to medium-sized businesses and a further two for large businesses.

Every plan, regardless of business size, comes with access to SSE Clarity, a powerful energy management platform that works in tandem with your smart meter (optional but encouraged) to help you measure, manage and forecast your energy usage.

Fixed price - Small to medium-sized businesses

Fixed price contracts means the price you pay for your energy will remain the same each month, regardless of the current market costs.

SSE Protect

If budget certainty is key for your business, SSE Protect provides up to three years fixed term that includes fully fixed energy prices, which includes unit prices and all existing non-commodity costs. It also offers 100% renewable electricity options.

SSE Choice

As the lowest cost fixed rate option, SSE Choice offers fixed wholesale energy prices only, which means unit prices stay the same but non-commodity prices may vary. The plans are available for up to three years and have renewable options available.

Fully flexible - Larger businesses

Flexible contracts will require regular management and analysis of the market so you can effectively buy underlying while baseload power monthly at good prices. You will be more susceptible to the volatility of the market, however.

SSE Shaping

With SSE Shaping, your energy usage profile remains fixed for the duration of your contract, which brings greater cost control and transparency. You'll also get access to live market prices to take advantage of changing market conditions.

SSE will fix your non-baseload energy so you can trade baseload-only power, the most transparent product on the market.

SSE Cash out

Your energy usage profile will remain fixed, like with SSE Shaping, but you'll also get full visibility of usage in real time to mitigate, or maximise, wholesale market price fluctuations.

This option is ideal for businesses who are readily able to keep track of usage, as it will allow you to sell any unused energy back to the grid with SEE Virtual Power Plant.

Achieving unused energy is also made easier by optimised forecasting, which combines your real-time energy usage and half-hourly energy prices for the following day to find ways to cut consumption.

SSE Business Energy: Sustainability and corporate responsibility

SSE is committed to clean energy and provides the options for their customers to join them in a more sustainable future.

Not only that, but they are dedicated to do it themselves, with their renewable energy coming entirely from their UK hydro plants and wind farms. And they've not just built some and stopped; SSE are continuing to grow their wind farms to the point where they will boast the world's largest offshore wind farm.

Dogger Bank wind farm

Dogger Bank is destined to the said offshore wind farm. It is being built off the North East coast of England and will be capable of supplying six million homes with clean, renewable energy.

Similar to this is the already-in-operation Seagreen, which is Scotland's largest offshore wind farm. They are also building Viking on the Shetland Islands, which is set to be one of Europe's most productive onshore wind farms.

In total, SSE Group is planning to invest £20.5bn by 2027 in a mix of low-carbon infrastructure which includes offshore wind farms and new networks.

Reaching net zero

If you and your company have a similar vision to that of SSE's, in that you are committed to eventually reporting zero carbon emissions, then one of their options is the way to go.

You can expect 100% renewable electricity sourced from a wind farm near your business which will be named, allowing you to know where it comes from so you can show your commitment and raise your reputation as a earth-conscious company.

Every business that signs up to an SSE renewable energy plan is helping to further their cause by joining it, adding one more piece on the road to a net zero nation.

SSE Business Energy: customer service

Business energy customer service, with a ringing phone, email and letter.

SSE is not a provider who will offer their service then leave you in the dark. They will actively look to help you get better energy usage, in turn helping to save you money.

SSE Clarity, mentioned earlier, is a great tool for self-management and analysing data yourself, but what's better is the energy experts and specialists that are on hand to help you should you want assistance.

Getting in touch to speak with someone at SSE Business Energy isn't too difficult either. They have separate lines for existing customers who want to switch to a new plan and new customers, so be sure you're using the right one.

  • Existing customers: 0345 725 2526
  • New customers: 0800 389 4466

Both lines are available to call Monday to Friday from 8:30am to 5pm. You can also contact them online, with an array of options to choose from that should suit your needs for contact.
