Octopus Business Energy | Our Expert Review

Renewable energy at excellent prices, for all business customers.

In the last few years, Octopus Energy has grown to become a key player in the UK's business energy market. This is down to a few factors that have proved popular with customers, including transparent, flexible tariffs, low prices and excellent customer service.

Octopus Business Energy: Rates and tariffs

Octopus Business Energy offers a variety of tariffs and contract lengths, for both electricity only and electricity and gas. Rates vary depending on region, but you can use the postcode checker on the Octopus Energy website to view current and historical prices.

Green Business Fixed

The most popular tariff for small businesses. Fixed contracts of 12 or 24 months provide stability for business customers; unit rates and standard charges won't fluctuate during your contract period, meaning you always know what you're going to be paying.

Plus, as with all of its electricity tariffs, Octopus' Fixed packages provide 100% renewable energy as standard.

Business Variable

Octopus also offers more flexibility with its variable tariffs for businesses. With these tariffs, unit prices rise and fall in relation to wholesale energy prices.

The major benefit here is that you could potentially end up paying much less for your energy, depending on current prices. However, the flipside is also true, and it can be more difficult to budget when your energy costs fluctuate so much.

It's worth noting though that Octopus won't lock customers into any particular tariff, and there are no fees for switching to a different tariff at any time - so you could head off any potential price rises by switching to a fixed rate.

No Standing Charge

Exclusively for business customers, Octopus has recently introduced a No Standing Charge tariff. This is exactly what it sounds like, and offers fixed unit rates and no standing charge, which means you'll only ever pay for the electricity you actually use.

Unit rates are typically higher than usual on these tariffs, but they are perfect for vacant properties or those with minimal energy consumption.

Electric Match

An innovative new tariff that links your business to specific green energy generators. This has the major benefit of being completely traceable, and the included online dashboard allows for reporting on emissions in granular detail.

Electric Match also uses time-matching, which rewards customers for using energy within 30 minutes of it first being generated. The dashboard gives a live forecast of your generator's energy production, meaning you can arrange to use more when there is more available, saving you money in the process.

Shape Shifters

A multi-rate tariff, Octopus' Shape Shifters package offers a low off-peak rate at night, a high peak rate between 4pm and 7pm, and an in-between rate - still cheaper than the standard variable rate - for the rest of the day.

It sounds complicated, but essentially this tariff rewards customers for using more electricity during the day and less in the evening, during peak times. It's perfect for businesses who use most of their energy during office hours (or late at night), and those with EVs to charge during the workday.

However, it's worth noting that this tariff is currently only available to existing Octopus business customers who have a working smart meter and pay by direct debit.

Octopus Business Energy: Customer service

Octopus Energy prides itself on its award-winning customer service, which customers consistently describe as polite, helpful and knowledgeable. In 2024, the company was named a Which? recommended provider for the seventh year running, and it has a fantastic Trustpilot score of 4.8 from over 300,000 reviews.

It's worth bearing in mind that the majority of these reviews are from domestic customers, but common themes among business reviews are fair prices, an easy-to-use website and, of course, that award-winning customer service.

Octopus Business Energy: Renewable energy

All of Octopus Energy's tariffs use 100% renewable energy as standard, and in fact the company is one of Europe's largest investors in renewables.

Octopus is a major contributor to the UK's growing solar industry and currently manages around 10% of solar farms across the country, including both large-scale and smaller, community-based farms.

The company also has a number of sustainability initiatives and incentives, such as electricity rate discounts for communities near wind turbines and innovative vehicle-to-grid energy storage solutions for customers with EVs.

Octopus Business Energy: Pros and cons

As with any supplier, there are a number of pros and cons to weigh up when considering an Octopus business energy contract.

Pros

  • Award-winning customer support
  • Competitive rates
  • A variety of tariffs to suit all business needs
  • All tariffs provide 100% renewable energy

Cons

  • Advance payment required on all contracts
  • Variable tariffs can be more expensive, although that's something you'll find with most suppliers

There's a lot to love about Octopus Energy. Its prices are competitive - consistently well below the energy price cap - and it offers a range of innovative tariffs that should be enough to meet any business' needs.

The company's focus on renewable energy is admirable, and ideal for businesses looking to track and reduce their emissions. Plus, Octopus' outstanding customer service is a factor that can't be ignored.

While the advanced payment required on all contracts isn't ideal, Octopus more than makes up for it with everything else it offers.
